Lev Manovich:The Database Response

The Database by Lev Manovich was an interesting and at times confusing article. The article didn't seem really like fact but mostly the author's perspective on the topic. I thought the article was about "The Database", which I think is the way humans as a society or cultural perceive information about the world, their lives and technology in the modern computer age. He discusses that not all new media objects are only databases. An example of this would be called an "algorithm". A computer game would be an algorithm. A database in it's cultural form is the world as a list of items, and it refuses to order this list. A narrative creates a cause and effect situation of unordered items of info. Both forms are apparently competing for the same territory of the human culture, each one trying to explain that there way is the better way of figuring out the meaning of life. I thought this article could have been an easier read in that the information he was giving me seemed to go in one ear out the other.

Sound in flash blog

I definitely agree that sound can play a major role in creating a whole a great experience for the viewer. It can really enhance the way an animation, video, still images, etc by bringing to life the project. Depending on how much time I have with my project I might add some sound to give the audience a little more of a feel for what I'm going for. Especially with the style of animation I am going for, which is the Looney Tunes style, sound is very important in letting the viewer know what's going on in the scene and really convey what action is taking place. Sound like I have been talking about above sets the mood of a scene in my opinion much more effectively then simply just having pictures. The author of the article really makes some great points about when, why. where and how to use sounds correctly in an animation project. I will definitely use the hand out when I start to add sound t my project.

60 Second Animation Treatment blog

I plan to make a 60 second flash animation about a fish and a worm under the water. The fish is constantly trying to eat the worm and the worm is always one step ahead of the fish. I have several influences in the reasons why I'm doing this animation. I'm a big fan of the golden age of cartoons(cartoons from the late 50's-60's). My cartoon will be highly influenced by cartoon greats such as Tom and Jerry, Looney Tunes, Roadrunner, and the list goes on. I think these cartoons are great because it doesn't matter how old they are or whether the audience watching is old or young everyone can watch them together. I want age to not really be a factor when watching my cartoon. The art direction that I am taking is going to highly resemble my influences such as a Bugs Bunny Cartoon, crisp lines, bright and warm colors in order to project a happy mood. I want it to look like it came out of the Looney Tunes era of cartooning. I will only have two main characters which I described above. Which will be a fish and a worm on a hook. The fish in my eyes will resemble Elmer Fudd, Tom, the coyote or daffy duck. The worm will take on the feel of a Bugs bunny, Tweety bird, Jerry or the roadrunner. One always trying to cause pain(the fish)and one dishing out the pain but doesn't really want to(the worm).
